We have been having some fun in the Lindsay Early Learning Drop-in on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday mornings. Summer drop-in runs from 9:30 – 12:00 until August 11. We had some fun ideas for a “Make It Box” & “Pick-a-Stick” shared by Jennifer… The Make It Box Get a box…any size…Large boxes can become boats, cars, trains, forts. Add a variety of items to the box…paper, tape, scissors, glue, sticks, yarn, fabric, shoelaces, pipe cleaners, paper plates, bags, tissue, markers, feathers….whatever...

Today is Family Literacy Day! This year’s theme is “15 Minutes of Fun”. Early Literacy does not mean learning to read early; it means helping our children be READY to LEARN. Having fun with literacy as a whole family is a great way to connect with each other and learn together. Be face-to-face with your infant, toddler or pre-schooler and sing, read and play together. It’s easy to incorporate literacy into your life. So have some fun learning together today….and every day! Here are some resources which offer loads of ideas for songs, books, games and activities: /uploads/Learning can happen...

It's December 7 and our United Way Community Garden garden plot is still looking good! There is enough lettuce, parsley, cilantro, oregano, rosemary and a bit of dill left in the garden for a healthy salad. Our OEYC participants enjoyed planting, cultivating and harvesting from 2 garden plots this past season. The produce was incorporated into meal planning for several of our programs with great success! We're looking forward to next year's growing season.
Debbie Dean, from the HKPR Dental Department, came with her friend Ally the Alligator to the Minden centre on November 18. The children learned how and when to brush their teeth, as well as what food is good or bad for their teeth. Each child received a toothbrush to take home and there were lots of great tips for the parents too. Dental care is so important, starting good habits from an early age will help your child have healthy teeth for life!

Children were having fun exploring tin foil art today at the Haliburton OEYC! Painting on tin foil gives children opportunities for sensory experiences and develops vocabulary and motor skills. Tin foil can be secured to an easel, or laid flat on a table. The tin foil can be left smooth which provides a canvas that is shiny and reflective or crinkle it up for a ‘bumpy’ canvas. Paint with paint brushes, cotton swabs, or allow children to use fingers and hands to paint with. Adding a few drops of dish soap to the paint creates a nice slippery feeling paint and aids in clean up as well. So get...
OEYC participants enjoyed lots of activities this week. Scooping & measuring corn, playing with goop, slime...and pumpkins! OEYC staff mindfully plan and set up sensory play so that children have opportunities to explore, discover and simply have fun. Why not create a fall sensory bin to enjoy at home? Corn, leaves, acorns and pine cones are great items to add...use your imagination to create your own unique sensory bin. Pumpkins are great for sensory play....get out your potato masher, scoops, cups or just use your hands. Let your child reach in to that pumpkin and scoop and discover what's...
OEYC participants and staff recently visited the 'Pumpkin Patch' at Buckhorn Berry Farm. Everyone enjoyed a wagon ride, the barnyard animals, play area, straw bale maze and the pumpkin cannon. Every child went home with a pumpkin...picking out just the right pumpkin was serious business!
